5 Ways to Get More LinkedIn Profile Views

5 Ways to Get More LinkedIn Profile Views Youve heard the news, LinkedIn is the place to be for job search. But why isnt your phone ringing off the hook with job offers?   Your LinkedIn profile is always searchable, unlike your resume, that lives on your computer, locked away. Did you know:   90+% of recruiters are using LinkedIn to search for talent! And according to Jobvites social recruiting study, recruiters use LinkedIn to search, contact, keep tabs, and vet candidates.  Heres what you need to do to ensure recruiters are looking at your LinkedIn profile! Jobvite social recruiting study 2013 Building a great profile is a small part of what attracts people to view your profile. If you really want more people viewing your LinkedIn profile, youll need to do these 5 things. 1. Use The Right Key Words In Your Headline By default, LinkedIn uses your most recent job title and employer in your headline. CHANGE THIS. Remember, your LinkedIn profile is about showcasing you, not your employer. Think about the keywords or phrases that a recruiter or hiring manager would use to search for someone to fill a job. These are the words you would want to use in your headline. You have 120 characters, use them wisely! If you are about to graduate, you dont need to include that information in your headline. Use keywords found in job postings you are interested in applying for. See examples here. It is doubtful anyone would search for team player, organized, other similar buzzwords (via  LinkedIn), so avoid using them in your headline (and in your LinkedIn profile). 2. Say More In Your Summary Your summary should provide a high-level overview of what you do (and what you like doing). LinkedIn provides you with 2,000 characters. Here are just some of the things you can include in your summary: Use keywords and skill sets that are valued by future employers. Describe the successes you have had (and quantify whenever possible) List the industry experience you have accumulated Include processes, procedures, software and other tools you are familiar with Consider adding samples of work, pictures and other media too! Here are examples of great LinkedIn summaries. 3. Create A New Status Update Every Day As I skimmed through my home page, looking for status updates from job seekers in my network, I was sadly disappointed. I couldnt find a single one! One of the best ways to stay top of mind and build a memorable reputation is by sharing on-brand news, stories and events. On-brand for a job seeker is NOT job search stuff. It is content related to the next desired occupation. Here is an example of an update sent by someone in marketing. Here are 10 LinkedIn status update ideas you can use. 4. Connect with  Recruiters and HR If you are job searching, then you should absolutely be connecting with corporate recruiters, HR staff, and third-party recruiters! It doesnt guarantee anything, but, it just might help! Glassdoor asked top corporate recruiters two questions- How would someone get on your radar? and was there a candidate that totally wow-ed you and if yes, how did they do it? The answers might just surprise youHeres one: How would someone get on your radar? It’s fairly easy to get my attention since I’m fairly transparent. Reaching out to me via Twitter and LinkedIn are one of the easiest ways to get on my radar and even better when those individuals begin interacting with my posts, especially Philips related posts.   That level of interaction demonstrates their passion for Philips and even if I don’t have an employment opportunity available for that person at that precise moment, I’ll remember that person. Chrystal Moore,  Senior Recruiter,  Philips Healthcare 5.  Add Your Thoughts To Group Discussions Some recruiters lurk in groups looking for talent. Use occupation or industry-specific groups to network! (Networking = building relationships and helping others!) Use these concepts to connect with new people, offer advice/help, share interesting news.  This example would be great for leadership or recruiting.  12 Ways to Build a Better LinkedIn Profile has more helpful tips for improving your LinkedIn profile. And here is a 20 point checklist for creating an awesome LinkedIn profile. Monitor Your Profile How do you know if the changes have helped? Check out the stats! They are on the right side of your profile. Do this before you make the changes and then check the stats about 2-3 weeks after youve made the changes. You should see the numbers increase!

near Brooklyn want a plan to quit your job, read me! - When I Grow Up

If you live in/near Brooklyn want a plan to quit your job, read me! - When I Grow Up Theres only 7 spots left in my live Brooklyn workshop on 10/23 for An Effective Escape: Make Your Plan So You Can Ditch the Dreaded Day Job and I realized I didnt even tell ya about it! I was approached by Holstee they of the manifesto pictured above to be part of their first round of Learning Labs (aka workshops in their space). They wanted to bring to life each line in their manifesto (eventually), and I was asked to speak on the line: If you dont like your job, quit. Of course, I didnt just wanna talk about what I did in the 2 years and 7 months it took for me to quit my day job as an Executive Assistant (in March 2010!) and become The When I Grow Up Coach full-time. I wanted to help the attendees figure out  their effective escape, and walk out of that room with the structure for their own plan. This class is my workbook brought to life, where  youll find out how I created a sturdy safety net so that I could leave my corporate job in March of 2010 and make the leap to full-time coach and what Id do differently if I had to do it again. You’ll also leave with the framework of your own sturdy safety net; potential Plan B’s that won’t leave you beaten down without a soul; and your Breathe Easy number that’ll give you enough of a financial cushion to make your escape before 2024. With the workshop maxed out at just 20ish people, therell be plenty of QA time, ukulele playing and a free copy of my Effective Escape workbook included in the ticket price. If you live in/near Brooklyn and are stuck in  how you can actually leave your job to do what you love (while still being a responsible grown-up!), I really hope to see ya there!

This Entrepreneur of the Year Left Xerox For A Gravel Pit

This 'Entrepreneur of the Year' Left Xerox For A Gravel Pit In early 2011 Kaye Stone-Gansz was cruising along the executive track at Xerox when the downsizing company dangled an attractive buyout package. To the surprise of her colleagues, the 25-year vet took the bait. “I thought, This is my sign; this is my time to do my own thing,” says Stone-Gansz, who had long harbored entrepreneurial aspirations. Rather than begin from scratch, she decided to look for a business to buy. At Xerox she had started as an engineer, and then jumped around several disciplines before becoming a director of product services. Her strength was serving as a liaison between engineers and customers, and she figured she could use those talents to grow an existing company. The buyout allowed her to stay at Xerox for eight more months, during which time she shopped for businesses around Sodus, N.Y., where she lives with her husband and daughter, now 3. After she considered a scrap-metal business, the owner of nearby Smith’s Gravel Pitâ€"a 100-acre mining facility specializing in gravel, stone, sand, and topsoilâ€"heard of her intentions and reached out to see if she’d be interested in his company. Stone-Gansz didn’t know a thing about gravel. “But I’m a quick study,” she says. While the pit had revenue of $680,000 in 2011, its owner ran it as a secondary business. “So he left many markets untapped,” says Stone-Gansz. Confident she could expand the customer base among municipalities, garden centers, and the like, she negotiated a $1.2 million purchase price. She drew some funds from retirement savings and secured a loan for the remainder. Upon taking over the business in February 2012, she immediately began spending mornings at the pit and afternoons connecting with potential clients. “My best advertisement is me,” she says. So far, she’s grown the customer base from 150 to 225, and boosted revenue nearly 50%. And while she’s working more hours, Stone-Gansz says her personal gratification has skyrocketed. “I go home feeling really good about each new customer I got.” By the Numbers $600,000 Amount she drew from savings: The majority was pulled from her 401(k). Stone-Gansz, who saves regularly in an IRA, doesn’t feel her retirement is compromised, just different. “Once you have your own business and you’ve acquired assets, they become your retirement.” 70% Initial pay cut she took: In her first year Stone-Gansz paid herself $40,000. Between that money, her package from Xerox, and her husband’s salary as general manager at a fabrication company, the family was able to cover its living costs. Last year she upped her pay to $80,000. 2013 When she was named female entrepreneur of the year: The award, from the New York State Small Business Development Center, was based on her having grown the company so quickly. While the pit’s 2013 revenues hit $1 million, Stone-Gansz anticipates another 50% increase in 2014 as a result of new projects and continued customer growth. Going Abroad As a Marine Corps Spouse Transformed the Way I See My Job Heres Why

Going Abroad As a Marine Corps Spouse Transformed the Way I See My Job Heres Why Veterans and those who love them make no shortage of sacrifices on behalf of this country. But one sacrifice thats perhaps not as readily acknowledged is the obstacles both veterans and military spouses can face when building out their careers in the civilian realm. This Veterans Day, Fairygodboss and Getting Hired asked folks in the veteran and military family community to share the ways this identity has aided and at times impeded them professionally, as well as their No. 1 pieces of advice to fellow military community jobseekers.Do you believe veterans and their families should have the right to build civilian careers free of obstacles and biases? Show your support and Pledge4VetFamilies here.--Who Angie RhinehartWhat Registered Nurse/Lead Preceptor, George Washington University HospitalWhereWoodbridge, VA--How long have you been in your current role, and what were you doing previously?I have been at GWUH for one year. Prior to that I was a contractor for the Navy at an overseas Branch Health Clinic. As a military spouse, what are some of the mora unique challenges youve had to face when it comes to finding and maintaining employment? Are there any obstacles people might not expect? My greatest hurdle came just trying to get my degree. In nursing, it is next to impossible to transfer programs. You pretty much have to complete the one you start. Well, with waiting lists a year long and a two-year program, it becomes very hard to complete a program before PCSing again. It took me seven years to finally get to a place where school was a reality. I literally had my pinning ceremony/graduation and got on a plane for Japan the next day to PCS. II have been asked in interviews if I was a military spouse because my resume reads just like one. It isnt that I am not proud of being one, but I fear the preconceived ideas people have about us.Obtaining a new nursing license every time I move can be costly and time consuming which delays my employment process. Each state can require different things for licensing. I couldnt get a license in VA without returning to CONUS and DC was very costly and required a in-person visit to the Health Department to obtain the license in the timeframe I needed it. Then, keeping up continuing education for each license, deciding which license to keep and which to let go is another layer. How about misconceptions are there any false beliefs or stereotypes about what it means to be a military spouse that youve encountered, especially as it relates to you professionally? When I was questioned (by potential employers) about my status as a military spouse it was very uncomfortable. Ive had current coworkers comment back to me when telling them that I am moving You have no stability Its always a stereotype that milspouses arent committed due to the fact that we move often. But, I can almost guarantee that you wont find a more committed employee who goes above and beyond for the time they are with the company/organization. We may only be with you for a few years, but we will leave it better than we found it. Its just what we do.What has your company done to help with any of these challenges, and in what ways have you felt supported?I have felt very supported by my company. They hired me, first off, with a competitive salary. Theyve afforded me opportunities to progress in my career. They offer a 401K that actually allows me to become vested before moving again. No other place has done that. They also offer a wonderful education package that would allow me to advance my career to the next level. My manager continues to see potential in me and give me more opportunities despite knowing that I am moving again in the next year. She maximizes what she sees in me and I am grateful for that type of trust and opportunity.Do you believe your experience as a military spouse has provided you with any unique perspectives or talents th at aid you professionally today? My goodness, YES My experience of living overseas right out of nursing school did. Was I bitter, resentful, angry? Sure, I was But having to navigate a foreign country to take my licensure exam gave me a tenacity I never knew I had. And then, knowing I wouldnt get the job I became a nurse to do because we didnt have a hospital on our kusine made me more of the above-mentioned emotions. I had to volunteer for a year before getting a job on the base due to a lack of civilian positions, but that job opened my capacities so much as a nurse. I learned so much from working with the military physicians, flight surgeons and corpsman. It broadened my knowledge base and skill set.Living in a foreign country gave me such a unique perspective and appreciation of my patients back stateside who arent from the U.S. and dont speak English. Having had experiences with the host nation medical services, I learned that there are different ways of practicing medicine. It doesnt necessarily make them wrong, just different. But, I also got firsthand experience about cultural competence and how scary it can be being a patient in a hospital that practices very differently than what you are used to and, oh by the way, they dont speak your language. It has had a profound effect on how I approach my patients now who arent native to our system or language. It has also given me a love for all kinds of people from all types of backgrounds. I am fascinated by the stories of what makes my patients who they are. It has given me a strength and tenacity to carry some very heavy burdens and to meet my patients were there are in an effort to best meet their needs.Whats the one career move youve made that youre most proud of?Becoming a nurse, period. I am a second career nurse and chose this route after delivering my first child 7 weeks premature. It was a pivotal moment in my life where I physically stopped in my tracks and was turned in the opposite direction. I hav e a passion for sick babies and their mamas (and dads) because Ive been that mom on the other side of the bed. I know how scary the NICU world can be and how leaving the hospital goes against every instinct you have as a mom and rips at the fiber of your being. Premature birth is something no one prepares for we all tend to skip that chapter of the pregnancy books. I consider it my lifes calling to come alongside these families and help them through the scariest days of their lives. What about outside of work how do you most enjoy spending your time?I love to read, scrapbook, travel and do activities with my family. But, work keeps me busy and often exhausted Nurse lifeWhats your 1 piece of advice for women, and especially other military spouses, who are looking for jobs right now?Find your passion and own it Be proud of who you are and go in with confidence. You arent just a military spouse. You are a rockstar nurse, teacher, therapist, attorney, real estate agent you fill in your career. Be flexible. You may not get the position you most want in the area you want, but there will be something for you. And besides, it may just broaden and stretch you as a person. Consider the commute I commute almost an hour and it stinks, but it has given me a great opportunity. Dont just brush a place off because its farther away. And lastly, be persistent Call the recruiters and find out what they are looking for. Network I got my job because I posted in a local group of military spouses. Just so happens, one was a nurse and got my resume into the right hands. You got this
